Nutrition
plays a crucial role in our daily lives as the food and liquids we consume contain particular nutrients that are necessary for our physical and mental growth. It is essential to have a balanced diet and know what food to eat, how much to consume, and what types of nutrients are in each food item.

When we consume food or nourishing liquids, our body digests and absorbs essential minerals, vitamins, fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and water. These nutrients are then converted into the bloodstream and energy that help our body grow and maintain good health.

Nutrition is important for an individual’s health because the food and liquids we consume can affect our body and health. Consuming the wrong diet may lead to various diseases or worsen pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart or kidney disease.

Food and water are essential for building and maintaining a healthy body. Each good food and liquid contains important nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. These nutrients play different roles in keeping our body healthy and building new cells.

Protein is essential for building muscles and a strong immune system. It is made up of long chains of amino acids, and our body needs all 22 different types of amino acids to function properly. Protein is abundant in our body and helps build new tissues and repair damaged cells. It also aids in the formation of hormones and enzymes that play a variety of roles in our body such as metabolism and sexual development. Some good protein sources include lentils, low-fat dairy products, tofu, nuts, seeds, peas, and tempeh.

Carbohydrates are the ideal source of energy for our body and provide us with the energy needed to form cellular constituents. They are made up of three compounds- carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen- and are found in four types of carbohydrates- sugar, starches, fiber, and gum. Consuming carbohydrates regularly does not cause weight gain, unless consumed in excess. There are two types of carbohydrates- complex and simple- and an excess of carbohydrates can cause the production of ketones in the body, leading to a condition known as ketosis.

Fats provide extra energy and are necessary for our body’s insulation and protection of vital organs. They consist of a wide group of compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water. Saturated fats, found in dairy products such as butter, cream, cheese, and some chocolates, are solid at room temperature, while unsaturated fats, found in soybean, sunflower, and corn oils, are liquid at room temperature. It is important to obtain an adequate amount of linoleic acid, one of the few fatty acids the body cannot produce on its own. Any adult needs one tablespoon of unsaturated fat daily.

Vitamins are organic compounds that regulate our body processes and play an important role in making our body function properly. Our body needs vitamins to grow and develop normally, and there are 13 vitamins necessary for our body. Each vitamin plays specific jobs, and low levels of a particular vitamin can cause deficiency diseases. Some good sources of vitamins include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Minerals regulate our body processes and make body tissues. They are found in our daily foods, and it is not necessary to take them separately. Some important minerals include chloride, calcium, copper, chromium, fluoride, iron, and iodine. Water is also a vital nutrient that gives cells shape, acts as a medium for body processes, and aids in maintaining body temperature and carrying away waste products.

In conclusion, nutrition plays a significant role in our lives. Each food and liquid contains its own nutritional value, which is necessary for our physical and mental development.
